Obituary

Samuel Lewis Grooms, affectionately known as “Baby Buttons” to his siblings was born on November 5, 1944, Louisa, VA. He was the third oldest of 17 children to the late Samuel Lewis Grooms Sr. and Rosa Waddy-Grooms-Pendleton.

During his youth, Sam graduated in 1963 from Eastern High School in Washington, DC.  While in high school, he participated in several different sports such as basketball, baseball, football and golf.  After High School, he attended a trade school to obtain a certified license for carpenter.  Once certified, Sam Grooms was one of the first carpenters to be certified and performed carpentry in Washington, DC.

In the 1960’s, Samuel (Sam) also enjoyed racing his brother’s (Marshall) door-car.  Whether it was on the street or on the racetrack; Sam was ready.  Fast cars, fun and comedy was the name of the game and he played in to the fullest.  He was well known for hilarious comments and constant joking.  He will be missed.

Soon after, he married his first wife, Anita M. Grooms which was his High School sweetheart.  Once married, they continued residency in Washington, DC and had two boys.  Sam was a family man and loved to attend family events which included horseshoes, music and playing cards.   After the passing of his first wife, Sam remarried to his long-time companion Barbara Grooms.  Together they raised five children.

Samuel (Sam) is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Lewis Grooms Sr. and Rosa Waddy-Grooms-Pendleton. He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his first wife, Anita Grooms (deceased); two sons: Darryl Grooms (deceased) and Roderick (Kim) Grooms; Grandchildren: Roderick Grooms Jr. (deceased), Brittany Grooms, Tatiana White, Kyneth Grooms; second wife: Barbara Grooms (deceased); Stepchildren: John Robinson, Rodney Robinson, Timothy Lewis Sr. and Kimberly Robinson; Step-grandchildren: Jasmine Fofana, Timothy Lewis Jr., Rasheed Robinson and Talik Wallace; Step-greatgrandchildren: Alaya Patron, Siblings: Lloyd Grooms (deceased), Hughson Marshall (Bonnie) Grooms, Janas Howard, Sherman Pendleton, Nathaniel Pendleton and Anthony Pendleton, Charlie Pendleton (deceased), Sarah Watson (deceased), Rosemary Price, Ida Pendleton (deceased), Frances Lewis, Sharon Bradshaw, Debra Banks, Amanda Parrish, Sarah Jackson, Alethia Grooms, Samuel Grooms Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, loving family and endearing friends.
