Kuno was born on June 6, 2018, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. The son of a Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix. He received his primary education at the Ventosa Kennel in North Carolina. In search of a better career, in 2019, Kuno relocated north to Maryland to take a job at the Forest Heights Police Department as their first K9 Dog. Kuno later matriculated to K9 School with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
Kuno was very energetic, loved to work, and loved chicken nuggets. Every day he would get excited as he got dressed for work and wore his uniform carrier proudly.
Kuno had a vast career that allowed him to work with multiple agencies and was a deputized member of United States Marshal Service, Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force to name a few. He also attended over 5,000 hours of training since starting his career. He’s had over 57 Deployments, 28 CDS scans, 29 patrol searches, and 17 person finds.
Kuno suffered a heatstroke while searching a school building for a burglary suspect. After collapsing, he never regained consciousness and slipped away on July 2, 2023. He was five years old.
He is survived by his partner and handler A/Sgt. K. Grooms and the Grooms family. Police Chief Anthony Rease and the officers of the Forest Heights Police Department. The Mayor and the Town Council. His co-workers: K9 Thor, K9 Vito, and Comfort K9 Coach. And a host of town residents.
